APT 2010 Young Heroes
From Joseph B. Morton and Allan A. Pizzato
We are pleased to announce again this year that we will serve as State Co-Chairs for Alabama
Public Television’s 2010 Alabama Young Heroes Awards. Success begins with the
support of guidance counselors and educators; therefore, we ask for your immediate
submission and support of students who meet the qualifications for these scholarships.
Alabama Public Television began the Young Heroes Awards nine years ago, honoring
students in Grades 9-12 who have excelled in academics, served their community, and
overcome specific hardships in life. These awards draw attention to students who meet the
criteria of courage, determination, volunteerism, and commitment to excellence. Each of the
five students selected for a Young Heroes Award receives a generous scholarship, as
well as a new laptop computer, associated software, and other gifts. This program is for
students across the state of Alabama. Honda, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, and Books-
A-Million are three of its lead sponsors.

The key to reaching students in need of scholarships is
through the observation of guidance counselors and teachers who recognize their student’s
accomplishments and needs. Will you nominate a qualified student who has made and makes
an impact in your community? You can make a difference in the life of an Alabama student in
Grades 9-12 who has excelled in academics, given of himself or herself through public service,
overcome a specific adversity or adversities, and inspired others through his or her deeds and
strength of character.
The deadline to receive nominations is December 18, 2009. Award recipients will be
announced in February of 2010. The Alabama Department of Education and Alabama Public
Television have joined forces to recognize the 2010 Young Heroes and Alabama’s Teacher of
the Year at the 2010 Stars in Education Awards ceremony to be held on Wednesday, May 12,
2010, at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live
throughout the state.
The Alabama Young Heroes Awards program shines a positive spotlight on the young people
of Alabama. We hope you will join us in making the 2010 awards the best yet.
Thank you.
