In October, 1979 then Birmingham mayoral candidate, now embattled Mayor Larry Langford stumped about tearing down Sloss Furnaces. It is around this time that members of the community angered by the demolition of Birmingham’s original train terminal and other sites rallied together to save Sloss, ultimately succeeding in having it designated a National Historic Landmark. Currently it is the only industrial site in the country to carry that designation.
