Maybe people were looking for something comforting amid the late-’60s tumult, or maybe they would have laughed regardless when a middle-aged, red-haired man walked onstage in a tuxedo, flapped his arms like a bird, crossed his eyes and said: “I got a seagull story to tell you. Gertrude and Heathcliff, they’re talking, the two seagulls, and she says, ‘Tell me, what’s a polygon?’ And he says: ‘A polygon? It’s a dead parrot, ain’t it?’ ”
