Resting Wren, Part 2

Having completed the background of this painting, Jerry next sketches the bird resting on the stump. Using a #4 bristle brush, he then blocks in the bird using inward strokes to create the loose shape and background for the feathers. While the body of the bird is drying, Jerry next adds light colored weeds for contrast to the front of the painting and adds detail with white and orange flowers to provide complimentary colors to the green weeds. Switching to the round Sable, Jerry teaches his feathering stroke as he applies the first level of light colored feathers to the breast, head and wings using the appropriate strokes. Next, switching to a dark color, Jerry can complete the eye, beak and dark sections of the feathered areas under the wings. The wren is now ready for final highlights, using pure white and again light feathered strokes. Switching back to the dark color, Jerry can reemphasize the shadow areas on the bird as well as putting in the details of the legs, feet and focusing
