What is Manufacturing?

Video Overview
See the origin of the word manufacture and watch as a manufactured product is examined. A ballpoint pen will be disassembled to illustrate the many components from which it is made, how those parts contribute to the function or look of the product, and the materials used to make them. Think about manufacturing as an integral part of our lives and ask pertinent questions. How does manufacturing affect us? Can you find anything around you that hasn't been manufactured? >
Extension Activities

Though people often take such simple items as ballpoint pens for granted, transforming raw materials into parts needed to make the pen required engineering, design, and technology skills as well as time, money, and effort.

Using Lesson 1 in the Teacher’s Curriculum Guide, show students a partially disassembled ballpoint pen and ask the questions posed in the video. Ask students to identify the features and the materials used to make the features, to discuss the steps involved in transforming the raw material into the finished product, and to review the different jobs people perform in making the pen.

Student Activity #1 “Examining a Manufactured Item” will provide students with an opportunity to work in teams and to investigate the parts and materials that go into the manufacture of everyday products such as pens, retractable pencils, and flashlights.
