Newsweek editor Marcus Mabry has gone below the steely eyed surface of the Birmingham-born Secretary of State to explore her upbringing in 1960's Birmingham. Mabry finds a woman of contradictions, who helped elect George Bush President twice, and yet whose best friend is gay. She studied piano for years, only to abandon it when she discovered she could never be among the best.
