The story of the legislative battle is the focus of the presentation by Governor Brewer, who was Speaker of the House in 1965 and a participant in the legislative proceedings. The Alabama constitution prohibited Governor George Wallace from succeeding himself. The proposed amendment, if approved, would have permitted him to run for reelection. The epic struggle pitted the legislative allies of Wallace against legislators supporting prospective candidates for governor who did not want to face the popular Wallace in the 1966 election. The amendment was defeated in the state senate after four weeks of emotionally charged debate. Unable to succeed himself, Wallace ran his wife, Lurleen Wallace, as a “stand in” for him and she was elected over several veteran Alabama political leaders without a run off.
