New Trends in Manufacturing

Video Overview
See the new manufacturing trends demonstrated in the Honda Manufacturing Plant of Alabama. Learn how mass production is a “push” system and lean production is a “pull” system. Hear from Honda associates about processes similar to kanban and kaizen and how they improve efficiency, product quality, and result in a happier workforce. >
Extension Activities

The trend in manufacturing today is to place more emphasis on the role of the worker and to obtain worker input. Complete Student Activity # 4, “Nuts and Bolts,” to provide students with hands-on experience of mass production as well as to introduce some of the recent trends associated with lean production. Show the video clip and ask students how they would refine the “Nuts and Bolts” activity based on what they learned about new trends in manufacturing. Using Lesson 4 in the Teacher’s Curriculum Guide, discuss in greater detail the processes mentioned in the video. The “New Trends in Manufacturing” sheets (pages 14-15) can be used to offer comprehensive explanations of the processes. Student Activity #5 “Profiles” can be read by the students to introduce them to four different careers in manufacturing. Discuss how the people featured in the profiles compare with the images they had of factory workers. To explore additional career resources, click on related links below.
