American Village Revolutionary Summer
The summer program consists of a daily schedule of historical vignettes scheduled every 30 minutes. Visitors may interact with people of the past such as Patrick Henry or Dolley Madison. You may even be conscripted into George Washington’s Continental Army! An outline of the specific revolutionary events of the day are listed on the back. You may choose one or all programs throughout the day from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Be a part of the movement! The positive effects of daily, unstructured time outdoors on kids’ health are well-documented and wide-ranging. Stone Tools with Flintknapping
Park Ranger Larry Beane will teach flint chipping from 10 AM to 3:30 PM, Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Little River Canyon National Preserve. We are scheduling sessions in the morning and afternoon, breaking for lunch at 11:30 to 12. The program will be at the Little River Canyon Center on Alabama Highway 35. Come learn to make stone tools like the ones made thousands of years ago. Most people will go home with a new or improved skill, a cutting tool, scraping tool, and a recognizable projectile point. Lee County Tomato Tasting Contest
The Lee County Historical Society is excited to announce the first ever county wide tomato tasting contest on July 13 at Pioneer Park. To enter your 'mater bring a basket of 4-8 tomatoes (or more if small) of a single variety. Participants may enter as many varieties as they wish. Entries must be present by 10 a.m. CST. and tasting will begin at 11 a.m. CST. Tomatoes will be grouped according to variety (beefstake, heirloom, cherry/grape, roma/pear, etc.) and a team of County Extension Agents will facilitate the voting. All participants and guests will have the opportunity to taste the tomatoes and cast a vote. Winning baskets will be determined for each category along with the overall best tomatoes in Lee County.
