River Dreams Film Showing

Join the Friends of Big Canoe Creek at the Springville United Methodist Church (6471 US Hwy 11) for a free screening of the documentary film "River Dreams" and meet filmmaker Hunter Nichols. Nichols, a canoeist and cinematographer, spent forty-four days paddling solo from his hometown of Birmingham to barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico. Hunter began his trip on the Cahaba River, renowned for its beauty and biodiversity. The voyage continued on to the Alabama River, then through the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, and finally entered the Gulf of Mexico. Each of these scenic waterways becomes a character in this inspiring film showcasing some of the last wild places remaining in the South. Doors open at 6:30pm and the film starts at 7:00pm

Shakespeare First Folio Tour

Visit the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts(MMFA) October 1-30 to see an original Shakespeare First Folio, part of the collection of The Folger Shakespeare Library. Assembled seven years after Shakespeare's death, the First Folio of 1623 includes 36 of his plays—18 of which had never been before published. Visitors to First Folio! will come face to face with the original 1623 book, displayed open to Hamlet's speech in which he debates whether "to be or not to be." During the exhibition, the MMFA will be coordinating educational activities and other events with our neighbor in the Blount Cultural Park, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

Be My Neighbor Day

Alabama Public Television, The Fred Rogers Company and PNC Bank are proud to present “Be My Neighbor Day” – a FREE special event bringing families together and encouraging volunteerism – Saturday, October 15 at Railroad Park in Birmingham. Popular PBS Kids character Daniel Tiger will be on hand for a morning of free kids’ activities. Families are encouraged – but not required – to bring gently used or new sweaters (think Mr. Rogers) to donate as we celebrate many ways to be a good neighbor.

Live On Adam Memorial 5k Run

Please join us November 12, 2016 on beautiful Dauphin Island for this flat and fast 5k course (USATF certified AL 13028JD). Before and after the races there will be food, beverages and entertainment. Awards will be given out by age groups. The “Live On Adam Memorial 5k Run/Walk and 1k fun run” is meant to honor and celebrate Adam Clark, who lost his life April 25, 2015 in the Dauphin Island Regatta tragedy. All proceeds from the event benefit the Adam Clark Memorial and Scholarship Fund, the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America Pediatric Programs including Camp Oasis, and the South Alabama Chapter of the Red Cross.
