The House Education Finance and Appropriations Committee passed out of committee a $6 billion dollar education budget. The money included a pay raise for teachers but no money for a capitol improvement program Gov. Bob Riley wanted. The Governor also wanted to provide an income tax cut. But there are some other budget cut proposals and those along with the Governor’s could still be passed by lawmakers.

Alabama lawmakers have heard from state agencies receiving money from the state's General Fund. The testimony given by those officials will help lawmakers in crafting a balanced budget. Lawmakers will also look at bills regarding a property owner’s right to use deadly force on an intruder.

The Alabama Legislature is working on a law to provide lawmakers with community service grant money. The money would be used by lawmakers fund projects in their districts. Lawmakers are also working on bills related to offering a class on the Bible as an elective in high school.

The Alabama Legislature is now in its third week of the 2006 Regular Session. The legislature has been working to pass bills aimed at reforming the state’s prison system. The Alabama Department of Corrections needs to relieve the number of state inmates in county jails and reduce overcrowding in prisons. The progress on this package of bills will be highlighted.

The Alabama Legislature begins its second week of the 2006 Regular Session. Bills introduced can be debated on the floor for passage and sent to the other chamber. Lawmakers hope to get many non-controversial bills passed during these early days.
