Lawmakers hope to complete work on the General Fund Budget for the state of Alabama. The Senate also has a proposal to charge a person with two crimes for murdering a pregnant mother. A measure establishing regulations between landlords and tenants is another measure lawmakers will try to pass before the end of the session.

The legislature returns from spring break with measures to raise the level of when Alabamians start paying income taxes and finishing work on the General Fund Budget. Lawmakers have only seven meeting days in the 2006 Regular Session left.

The state's budgets look to be hot topics of discussion. Doubts were raised about a bipartisan compromise to reform the state's tax code to stop taxing people with low incomes. Lawmakers will continue to work on both budgets, to not only balance the bottom line but reach agreements on it.

The state's budget for education is expected to be debated on the floor of the Senate. The budget provides money for Alabama's K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and other education activities in the state. The House of Representatives may take up a measure to allow law enforcement officials to seize the property of illegal immigrants.

The Alabama Senate plans to work on the state's education budget. The budget passed by the House includes a teacher pay raise and an extension of
the school year by five calendar days. The Senate will also get a bill that passed the House calling for a sales tax holiday.

The Alabama House passed a record six billion dollar budget for education. The budget includes a pay raise for teachers and retirees. Representatives passed the budget on a 99 to 3 vote. But the budget did not include Governor Bob Riley’s proposal for an across-the-board tax cut. The Alabama Senate now gets the measure and begins to work on the budget.
