What We Do (see our history)
Since 1997, Alabama Public Television, through its Educational Services
Department, provides Ready To Learn programs, services, and
resources to child care professionals, teachers, and parents of children
birth through the elementary years.
• New Partnership with Talaris Research Institute
Ready To Learn has received a grant from Talaris Research Institute to bring Parenting Counts: A Focus on Early Learning to Alabama parents and early care/education professionals! Parenting Counts is a multimedia program that uses a series of television spots, printed material and workshops to make the research on best parenting practices part of every day parenting decisions. Through a partnership with PBS, Parenting Counts reaches thousands of parents in 40 communities across the country. For a wealth of parenting information and resources go to http://www.talaris.org.
• Services
Currently, the Alabama Ready to Learn Service, working
in the areas of Parent Education, School Readiness and Success, Early
Literacy Development, and Extended-Care Education, supports 4 state-wide
initiatives:
• Workshops/Events
All four RTL initiatives provide on-site workshops,
resources, and books for child care professionals, teachers, and parents
across the state. In addition, the RTL staff serves on and participates
in many community, regional, and state-wide educational committees, events,
and projects.

• Broadcasting
An important component of the Ready To Learn Service in Alabama is the
PBS KIDS block of commercial free, non-violent educational children’s
programming 7 days a week. APT broadcasts a 10 ½ hour block of children’s programming each weekday with a 5-hour block on weekends. In addition, APT also offers the digital schedule APT IQ, which offers hundreds of hours of child and young adult programming.
• Funding
Funding for Ready To Learn is provided by the Alabama Educational Television
Foundation, the Alabama Department of Human Resources, and the Corporation
