Mount Vernon Curriculum Support Materials

Recommended for First Grade to Sixth Grade

Mount Vernon Curriculum Resources

The Mount Vernon Field Trips page is no longer available for accessing the 2011 electronic field trips. Information about the 2012 field trip will be available in early January, 2012.

Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens and Alabama Public Television have compiled a wealth of educational content related to the field trip that may be accessed at the following websites:

Explore the George Washington Museum located in Columbiana, Alabama

Mount Vernon Estates & Gardens web site

Discover the real George Washington using an interactive timeline

Use provided teaching materials and modules to research Martha Washington

      Search "george washington"

Games with an 18th century theme

A blog about George Washington and the time period in which he lived

Grade level: K-3 (PDF)
An essential part of this experience's success is to provide your students with thorough background knowledge before coming to the farm (or viewing the Electronic Field Trip). This teacher manual is filled with background information for teachers and includes instructional ideas to use before and after a field trip to Mount Vernon. Information includes vocabulary to listen for, pre-visit instructional materials, post-visit instructional materials, Virginia’s SOL objectives, extensive teacher background information, “rate your knowledge” form, KWL chart, T-Chart, Data Retrieval Chart, Four Square Chart, Job Web Chart, Learning Quilt, and a Venn Diagram.

The Seed to Table Teacher Manual was provided by the education staff at Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens.
