By the mid-1960s, the Civil Rights Movement was in full swing, with African American leaders and community members in Selma and the surrounding areas taking action to end segregation and gain voting rights for all citizens. The march from Selma to Montgomery was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement that led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
